Architecture memorials

1. Voskresenskaya Church
  The oldest historical monument of the town. Its building was started by of the founder of Sumy – Gerasim Kondratiev and it was completed by his son Andrei, a colonel of Sumy Regimen, in 1702. The Church was also a part of fortress protecting its north-western side. It is a rare in Ukraine two-floored church. Bell tower was built at the beginning of the XX century.

2. Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral
It was founded in the middle of the XVII century at the same time as the town itself. In 1776-1788 wooden cathedral was replaced by stone building that was reconstructed in 1858. Modern look of the cathedral was the result of the last reconstruction done by M. Lovtsov, Academician in Architecture, in 1882-1892, at the expense of traders Dmitriy and Nikolai Sukhanovs from Sumy. Architecture of the cathedral combines elements of renaissance, classicism, barrocco. Icons and painting were done by famous artists V.Makovskiy and K.Lebedev. Wonderful iconostasis made of Italian marble and Ural malachite decorates the cathedral. Eight metal statues of saints, 3 meters each, are installed on the roof. They were founded at Sumy iron foundry. Clock with bell was made by famous English company.

3.St. Paul and Peter Church
  At the town cemetery. It was built in 1851 at the donation of population of Sumy. Family burial-vaults of Kharitonenko and Sukhanov with beautiful gravestones done by famous sculptors A.Kruasi and M.Antokolskiy are situated near the church.

4.Trinity Cathedral
  It had been built in 1902-1914. It resembles Isaac Cathedral in Saint Petersburg by composition and style. The author of the project was G.Sholts, a local architecture. The cathedral was built at the expense of the richest local manufacture and patron of art Paul Kharitonenko who executed his father’s will. Interior decoration was done by famous artist M.Nesterov (icons) and young architecture A.Shchusev. Painting was not completed due to Revolution of 1917.

Museums

1. Sumy Oblast Art Museum (Red Square, 1).
  It was founded in 1920. It was formed of nationalized local private collections and collection of O.Gansen. Today the museum is one of the richest historical and cultural centers in Ukraine, storage of unique paintings and pieces of applied art. It is situated in the building of former State Bank built at the beginning of the XX century by architecture G.Sholts.

2.Sumy Local Museum (str. Kirov,2).
  It was founded in 1920, but during the years of fascist occupation the most valuable collections were lost. Now the museum has a unique collection of archaeological findings belonging to early Slavonic and ancient Slavonic periods, rare materials about Sumy Oblast history and nature. The museum is situated in the building of former Uyezd Administration built in the second half of the XIX century. In 1905 local printing-house and editorial offices of first newspapers were located here. Famous writers A.Kuprin and V.Korolenko visited the Administration.

3.Chekhov Memorial (str. Chekhov, 79).
  Unique architecture complex of noble family the Lintvarevs, XVIII-XIX, in Luka. In I888-I889 Anton Chekhov , a great writer, used to live in western outhouse. Chekhov dreamt about having settled in Luka but his dream didn't come true. "Abbatia and the Adriatic sea are beautiful but Lika and the Psyol are better" he wrote from Italy to his friends in Sumy in 1894.
